Jewellery Setting Types Guide

Visual reference for the most common gemstone settings, with security ratings, ideal stone shapes, and trade-offs for each style.

How to Choose a Setting

The right setting balances three things: security (how well it protects the stone from impact and loss), light performance (how much of the stone is exposed to catch light), and lifestyle fit (how the wearer uses their hands day to day). A setting that maximises brilliance, like a delicate prong, isn't always the right choice for someone who works with their hands constantly.

As a rule, lower-profile settings (bezel, flush, channel) suit active lifestyles and daily wear, while higher-profile settings (prong, halo, cluster) suit special-occasion pieces and showcase stones with maximum sparkle.

Prong Height & Metal Choice

Prong settings can be adjusted in height and count — four-prong settings show more of the stone and are common for round and princess cuts, while six-prong settings offer extra security for larger centre stones. Platinum and 18K white gold prongs are preferred for their strength relative to thickness, allowing more delicate-looking settings without sacrificing security.

Setting Choice for Manufacturing

For B2B production runs, setting type significantly affects manufacturing cost and time. Pavé and cluster settings require substantially more labour (individual stone-setting per piece) compared to bezel or channel settings, which can sometimes be partially automated with CAD-planned seats. When quoting custom designs, factor in setting complexity alongside stone count and metal weight.
