How Is Jewellery Metal Cost Calculated?

The raw material cost of a piece of jewellery is determined by three factors: the current spot price of the base metal, the purity of the alloy, and the weight of the piece.

Metal Cost = Weight (g) × Purity Fraction × Spot Price per Gram

For example, a 5 gram 18K gold ring at a gold spot price of $2,000/oz: the spot price per gram is $2,000 ÷ 31.1035 = $64.30/g. At 75% purity, the raw gold value is 5 × 0.75 × $64.30 = $241.13.

Understanding Karat vs Fineness

Gold purity is expressed in karats out of 24 parts. 18K gold is 75% pure gold. Silver, platinum and palladium are usually expressed by fineness, such as 925 silver or Platinum 950.

Raw Metal Cost vs Finished Jewellery Price

This calculator shows the raw precious metal content value only. Finished jewellery pricing also includes casting, filing, setting, polishing, gemstones, wastage, labour, overhead, design work and business margin.

Why Jewellery Quotes Are Time Sensitive

Precious metal prices move constantly. For manufacturers, even small changes in gold, platinum or palladium prices can affect production cost. This is why professional jewellery quotes are usually valid for a limited time.
