Chain & Necklace Length Guide

- Wrap a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string) around the base of your neck, where you'd like the necklace to sit.
- Note the measurement, or mark the string with a pen where the ends meet, then measure that length against a ruler.
- Add 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) to that number — this is your minimum comfortable necklace length, allowing the chain to hang rather than sit tight.
- If adding a pendant, add its length (including the bail) to your chosen chain length to calculate the total drop.
- Compare your result against the chart above to find the closest standard length.
Why Necklace Length Matters
The right necklace length does two things: it sits where you actually want it to sit relative to your neckline, and it works with the necklace's own weight and design rather than fighting it. A delicate pendant on too long a chain gets lost; a heavy statement piece on too short a chain can feel restrictive and sit awkwardly high.
Matching Length to Neckline
As a general styling rule: higher necklines (crew neck, turtleneck, collared shirts) pair best with longer lengths (matinee, opera) that fall below the fabric line, since a shorter choker-length piece would be hidden. Lower or open necklines (V-neck, scoop, off-shoulder) suit shorter lengths (collar, choker, princess) that sit close to the collarbone and complement the exposed skin rather than getting lost against a busy outfit.
Layering Multiple Necklaces
When layering, aim for at least 2 inches (5 cm) of difference between each length so the chains don't tangle or sit on top of one another. A common layering combination is a choker (14–16"), a princess (18"), and a matinee (20–24") worn together — each visible at its own distinct level.
A Note on Pendant Weight
Heavier pendants and larger centre stones pull a chain forward slightly when worn, which can make the necklace sit a touch lower than its stated length suggests.
